Visiting Birmingham for the events at Rickwood Field? This guide will look to provide some suggestions for places in the city to check out, as well as some local happy hours to try before the game. When selecting these places, we noted the lack of close establishments offering deals near the field and opted to choose 3 places near to each other in a central part of the city.

Rickwood Field, the oldest existing professional baseball stadium located in Birmingham, Alabama, will be the site of a special Juneteenth celebration MLB game between the San Francisco Giants (Away) and the St. Louis Cardinals (Home) on Thursday, June 20th, at 7:15pm ET. The game will be broadcast nationally on FOX, and streamable on FuboTV. For free streaming options, there's always a way if you search for it.

Rickwood Field was once home to the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro Leagues and featured MLB Hall of Famers Willie Mays, Satchel Paige, Mule Suttles, and Willie Wells. This game will undoubtedly honor the late Willie Mays, the last member of that legendary group of players, who recently passed away. Adding to the historic significance, 99-year-old Bill Greason, another former Black Barons player and the second-oldest living MLB player, will throw out the first pitch. The descendant of the former team, the Birmingham Barons, are the Chicago White Sox Double A affiliate and play at nearby Regions Field.

In addition to its rich baseball history, Birmingham was also at the forefront of the Civil Rights movement and is a center of Southern history and culture. When in town, be sure to check out the The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute ($13-15 entry) and the free Birmingham Museum of Art which are both near the restaurants we highlight. Another interesting piece of modern history also occurred in Birmingham, when Michael Jordan briefly played for the Birmingham Barons in 1994 during his first retirement from the NBA.

For an in-depth look at the game and more on the history of Rickwood Field, please refer to the MLB guide for additional information.
